I Choose to Keep My Joy

Do you ever wonder why people do or say things that they know will upset you? Some people get happy when they make other people sad or distressed? We often say, TBT, think before you talk, but these people would say the same things, even if they thought about it. So sad.

Then, instead of reacting, you look at that person and shake your head and say a prayer for them. I don’t know about you, but I choose to keep my joy. It is a conscious choice not to react. When those moments arise and someone seeks to upset me, I talk to God and ask Him to please take that distressing situation out of my thoughts and help me to focus on the good things. In no time, the person’s words and actions are gone. Sometimes like a pain, it creeps back into my head, but I go back to God and ask Him again to remove those thoughts and He does.

I have learned that perfection lies in none of us and all of us at times will do or say things that are hurtful to another, sometimes willfully and sometimes not. But we must choose to keep our joy. I have also found that people come with their own agenda and when you do something that is contrary to their agenda, they say or do things that attempt to take their frustrations out on you. I will not react to your pent-up frustrations in that you could not play me like a fiddle. It is my choice. Sometimes, your closest friends will put you through this test, but right is right and wrong is wrong. Regardless of the words or actions of others, I choose to keep my joy.

Nehemiah 8: 10 says, ” Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” How can I enjoy my good food and delicious drink if my mind is stayed on your foolish words, inconsiderate and provoking actions? I will not grieve. Oh no, I choose to keep my joy. Misery loves company and I choose not to visit.

I am a wife, mother, grandmother and caretaker, and I also work outside of the home. Life has its struggles but I am not complaining. It could always be worse. Many lessons learned on my journey and many more to come--I am sure. God has a sense of humor and I have certainly learned how to laugh at myself. You should too-it is quite therapeutic. After all, some things we cannot change so why not enjoy a good laugh at our own expense. See you soon.
